CAMBERWELL PETANQUE CLUB    NEWSLETTER     DECEMBER 2024

We have had a busy couple of weeks at the club. Our first Intraclub Tournament was a huge success, despite the pouring rain. The Christmas Party was a big event with over 85 members and guests attending. A highlight of the party was the presentation of the Club Awards. Congratulations to winners and all nominees.

Merry Christmas and happy New Year

from the CPC Committee

We  hope the festive season is filled with fun, friends, family

and good food and wine of course! May 2025 be a wonderful year

for you and your loved ones. See you on the pistes!

The Christmas Party was the perfect setting to recognise members who contribute so much to our club. Congratulations to our award winners and thanks to members who put the time and thought into providing nominations. Congrats to award nominees Wayne and Jude, their work is appreciated.

Club Sporting Achievement of the Year: High-achieving individuals who compete regularly and achieve a high PFA ranking for the year. Awarded to Vinz Mueller and Billie Wright.

Top of Ladder award: The person most often on top of the club ladder at the beginning of each month for the calendar year. Awarded to Bob Hutchinson. We will not be running a ladder competition next year. Our focus will be on running some more Intra Club Tournaments.

Club Person of the Year: A member who adds remarkable value to the club. Awarded to Rex Barker.

Club Volunteer of the Year: A member who makes a great contribution to the club through their volunteering efforts. Awarded to Pam Barnes.

As part of the awards presentation we acknowledged and celebrated the efforts of our trusty openers who make our game days possible week after week.

Thanks all CPC members who do so much for the club.

Festive cheer at the Christmas party

Our Christmas parties just keep getting better and better! What a night we had, with nearly 90 guests feasting  on a sumptuous spread of Christmas delights. Lots of food, laughter and even some enthusiastic dancing.

Big thanks to all the  wonderful helpers who made the night such a success. There were too many to name, but we will try … Di, Maree, Pam, Wayne, Faye, Noella, Leigh, Jenny, Heinz and Mary. Barbi did the table decorations which added to the festive atmosphere. Then there is Rex who organised the “disco” lighting and sound. And thanks to members who stayed back to nearly midnight to do the final clean up.

And lastly, a very special thank you to Kathy who organised the whole thing. The success of the party is mostly due to her hard work and planning.

Intra club tournament was a huge success

We had over 30 competitors play in conditions more suited to frogs and fish. As long as the coches weren’t floating we were playing. Damien took aqua petanque to a whole new level.

It was gratifying to see so many players who had never competed in a tournament. Congrats to Billie and Kathy who were the winners. Special mention to Rosalie, partnered with Ken, who was our top scoring “newbie”. We  received so much positive feedback that we will be running more tournaments next year. Thanks to Bob and Paul for organising such an excellent competition.

Christmas doesn’t stop our card games

Come and play on the last Friday of every month from 3pm - even the Friday after Christmas.  Have fun, learn how to play, our games masters Leigh, Pam or Deidre are happy to show you how.  As usual, petanque play begins at 5.30  or you can play cards throughout the evening as you wish. The next games session is Friday 27 December…a lovely way to recover from the Christmas madness!

Game days over Christmas period

The club is closed on Wednesday 25 December. There is no organised play on the following days; Saturday 28 December, Wednesday 1 January.

A reminder there is organised play and cards Friday 28 December and return to the regular calendar on Friday January 3.

Rules question answered

Can you fill in a long trench made by a boule when it rolls along loose gravel after it hits the piste? No. You can only fill in the  impression made by the boule where it first landed. Listen to episode 028 Pentanque Points Podcast for more in depth detail
